A life changing adventure for and teens. To explore, learn and have fun.

The Young Explorers Club is a diverse group of young professionals and university students who have volunteered to offer free workshops on a variety of nature-related topics. Our workshops cover a wide range of topics, including astronomy, survival skills, good hiking practices, and much more. The objective of this service is to provide Vaud students with an enriching educational experience that complements what they learn in class. Overall, the workshops offered by the Young Explorers’ Club offer a unique and enriching educational experience to Vaud students. By learning astronomy, survival skills, and good hiking practices, students can develop a deeper appreciation of the natural world and a better understanding of the universe around them. This experience can complement what they learn in the classroom and inspire them to continue their exploration and lifelong learning. In addition, by offering this service free of charge, the club helps make education and adventure accessible to everyone, regardless of their background or financial means.

The Importance of Workshops in Youth Development

Teaching children about nature, the outdoors, astronomy, survival skills, camping, and related topics is important for several reasons:
Encourage an appreciation of the natural world: By learning about the plants, animals, and ecosystems in their area, children can develop a deeper appreciation and respect for the natural world. This can inspire a sense of wonder and curiosity, as well as a desire to protect and conserve the environment.
Promoting physical activity and healthy living: Outdoor activities such as hiking, camping, and boating promote physical activity and a healthy lifestyle. By encouraging children to spend time outdoors, they can develop healthy habits and an active lifestyle.
Develop problem-solving and critical thinking skills: Activities such as wilderness survival and outdoor cooking require problem-solving and critical thinking skills. By practicing these skills in a hands-on environment, children can develop their ability to think creatively and solve problems in real-life situations.
Promote independence and self-reliance: By learning outdoor skills such as camping, boating, and survival, children can develop a sense of independence and self-reliance. These skills can boost their confidence and self-esteem, as well as prepare them for future challenges and opportunities.
Learn more about astronomy and space exploration: Astronomy and space exploration are important fields of study that can inspire curiosity and wonder in children. By learning about the history and science of space exploration, children can develop an understanding of our place in the universe and the importance of exploring beyond our planet.
Overall, teaching these topics to children can help them develop a range of skills and knowledge that can be useful in many aspects of their lives. It can also help them develop a sense of wonder and appreciation for the natural world, which can inspire a lifelong love of learning and exploration.

Our different workshops:

This workshop teaches students wilderness survival skills for different climates and terrains, such as desert, mountain, or forest. The workshop begins with an introduction to basic survival techniques, such as shelter building, fire making, and water purification. Subsequent workshops could focus on specific survival scenarios, such as getting lost in the wilderness or being stranded in a snowstorm. Students also learn first aid and emergency response in nature. The workshop concludes with a short final project where students plan and execute a survival scenario using the skills they have learned.

This workshop teaches students about astronomy and stargazing. It begins with an introduction to the different types of telescopes and binoculars, and the techniques used to observe celestial objects. Different workshops focus on specific astronomical events, such as meteor showers, eclipses, and conjunctions, and the techniques used to observe them. Students also learn about the history and mythology of astronomy, as well as the different constellations and stars visible in the night sky. The workshop concludes with a final project where students create a star chart or constellation guide for their region.

This workshop teaches students the basics of photography and wildlife observation. It begins with an introduction to the different types of cameras and lenses, as well as the techniques used to photograph wildlife in its natural habitat. Next, we focus on specific types of wildlife, such as birds, mammals, and insects, and the techniques used to observe and photograph them. Students also learn about the ethical considerations of wildlife photography, such as respecting animal habitats and not disturbing wildlife. The workshop concludes with a final project where students create a portfolio of their favorite wildlife photos.

This workshop teaches students the basics of cooking and outdoor foraging. It starts with an introduction to cooking equipment, such as camping stoves and Dutch ovens, and the different types of food that can be cooked outdoors. Next, we focus on finding wild edible plants and cooking them over an open fire. Students could also learn about food safety and hygiene when cooking and eating out. We can include hands-on activities, such as outdoor scavenger hunts, nature walks, and observation exercises. The program culminates in a final project where students plan and execute a group meal using forage ingredients

We begin the workshop with an introduction to basic outdoor skills and safety, including knotting, map reading, and compass navigation. After basing on the group’s feedback, we focus on specific skills, such as building a shelter, lighting a fire, and purifying water. Students also learn how to pack for different types of outdoor excursions, from day hikes to overnight camping trips. The workshop can culminate in a final project where students plan and execute an outdoor adventure using the skills they have learned.
