Day 5 · Latest

Hay bales, a river pool and meadow lanes

A clear, sunny day. The group climbed onto a row of wrapped hay bales and sat along the top under a deep blue sky, the forest dropping away behind them. Later they rode a narrow paved lane across a hillside of dry summer grass, one behind the other.

In the forest they found a clear green pool at the foot of a rock wall, and a few of them waded in to cool off. Up in a high meadow the leaders stopped for a photo of their own, with green slopes and pale limestone peaks behind.

Day 3 ·

Valley roads by bike and supper at the tents

The group rode out on quiet roads along a green valley, forested hills on both sides and high white clouds in a blue sky. They stopped by the roadside for photos with their helmets still on, next to a lorry stacked with logs, and again below a tall grey rock face, the bikes leaning on the fence. The red support van was there for a drink stop, its back doors open on the gear.

In the evening the blue dome tents stood on the grass at the campsite. The group gathered round the camping stove, where a big pot was heating, and helped with supper.
