Young Explorers Club

Across the heart of Switzerland, from Gruyère to Lauterbrunnen

A journey for adventurous families, moving together from region to region by bike: from the medieval village of Gruyère to the cliffs and waterfalls of the Lauterbrunnen valley, through alpine valleys, lakeside paths and mountain villages.

The route is chosen for children and parents alike. Adults ride a bike or an e-bike, children a bike or a tandem with an adult, and a support vehicle, professional leaders and flexible distances keep every stage safe and enjoyable; on the longer stretches, part of the way is covered by car or train. Nights are spent in hotels, in a private chalet and once in tents by a lake. Everything is organised, from Geneva Airport and back, in English and French.

More details

  • What's included

All inclusive: the bike (bike or e-bike for adults, bike or tandem for children), accommodation, meals, equipment, the support vehicle and the transfers from and to Geneva Airport. Optional activities are extra. Payment in instalments is possible.

  • Fitness & experience level

Families who enjoy cycling: children should be comfortable on a bike for a few hours a day, or ride a tandem with an adult. Distances are flexible, e-bikes help the adults, and the support vehicle can take anyone who needs a rest.

  • Ages, group size & staff ratio

Families with children from 8 years old. A child is anyone under 16; from 16, the adult price applies. The group rides with professional leaders and a support vehicle.

  • A typical day

Morning: a guided bike stage. Lunch: a meal together or a picnic outdoors. Afternoon: a second activity or free family time. Evening: relaxed dinners, games and shared moments.

  • Meeting point & travel

We meet at Geneva Airport and travel together to Gruyère; the camp ends with a transfer back to Geneva Airport.

  • Health, medication & dietary needs

There is no nurse on the camp, but many of our staff are trained in first aid, and someone responsible for first aid and crisis management is always with the group. If your child falls ill or is hurt, the team takes them to the nearest doctor or hospital and calls you at the first opportunity.

    • Hand any medicine to the staff on arrival, with a written note on the dose and timing.
    • Give the details of medicines, allergies and diets in the trip preparation form in your family account, so the team knows before the camp.
  • Safety & insurance

Many of our staff are trained in first aid, someone responsible for first aid and crisis management is always with the group, and our policies follow the standards of the Vaud Youth Protection Service (SPJ).

    Every participant needs:

    • Health and accident insurance covering illness and accidents during the camp, rescue costs included (ambulance or helicopter)
    • Civil liability insurance

If your child is not covered, you can add the insurance we offer when you book.

  • Cancellation & refunds

Our terms are those of the camp contract you sign when you book.

    • Without cancellation insurance, the camp fees are not refunded or transferred, whatever the reason.
    • With cancellation insurance (CHF 210 / week), booked for each child when you register, the camp fees are refunded, minus the price of the insurance, if your child cannot come because of an illness or an accident, or the death of a parent, brother or sister, or grandparent. Tell us in writing at least 48 hours before the camp starts, with a medical certificate or a death certificate.
    • The insurance does not cover a cancellation less than 48 hours before the camp, or an illness, injury or family situation that arises during the camp.
    • There is no refund for a late arrival, an early departure or a child sent home.
    • If a visa is refused, we refund everything except CHF 250 of administrative fees, on the written decision of the Swiss consulate or embassy.
    • If we cancel a registration, everything you paid is refunded.

Every cancellation is made in writing.

  • Can we come on other dates?

Yes. We often organise family camps on other dates and private trips in Switzerland. [Write to us]({contact}) with your dates and the ages of your children.

  • Does the programme of activities change week by week?

Yes. Most of our participants stay for two weeks or more, so the activities change every week: a child who stays several weeks does something new each week rather than the same programme again. The day-by-day programme on this page shows one typical week.

04 / 07 · Where we stay

Where we stay

The route follows a set itinerary through the Swiss Alps, from Gruyère to Lauterbrunnen. Each night we sleep somewhere new:

  • Hotels along the way, chosen for families
  • A private chalet for one night
  • A night of camping beside an alpine lake

Luggage travels in the support vehicle, so families ride light.

05 / 07 · Safety & philosophy

How we do it

At Young Explorers Club, safety comes first in everything we do outdoors. We keep strict measures in place so that every child, whatever their age, feels safe throughout their stay:

  • SafetyOur leaders and instructors are trained and experienced in the outdoors
  • SafetySomeone responsible for first aid and crisis management is always present
  • SafetyA participant to staff ratio of 5:1
  • PhilosophySmall groups One leader for every five children, so every child is known by name.
  • PhilosophyChildren choose Every day offers real options, and nobody is pushed into what they are not ready for.
  • PhilosophyOutside, all day Phones stay away for the week: the mountain is more interesting.
  • PhilosophyMany languages, one table Children from different countries share the same games, meals and campfire.
  • PhilosophyLeaders, not babysitters Chosen for how they are with children as much as for what they can climb.
